Month 2 — Islands

Month 2—Islands

These seven papier maché islands grew out of looking through materials I had around the house. Materials: masking tape, coffee filters, food coloring, colored markers, Elmer’s glue, acrylic paint, styrofoam, newsprint, wire, sequins, beads, sawdust.

These materials are unprecious, widely available and multi-purpose. They are handed out for craft hour to children and the deeply neurodivergent. (Writing that is uncomfortable but it’s true and not negative.) Using these cheap materials freed me from the burden of craftsmanship or meaning.

Making these was like tossing seeds into the air to see what took root. These islands are the survivors. They don’t feel the need to make sense. They simply are.
